DETAILED INFORMATION

Pharmacy instruction at Howard University began in the “;Department” of Medicine in 1868. The initial course, held in the evening, offered students “;knowledge of the art and science of pharmacy.” The first student graduated in 1870. With advances in medicine and the health sciences, the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences was merged into a new College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences and was subsequently re-named the College of Pharmacy.
The College of Pharmacy currently offers: a 4-year entry level Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree program; a 5-year entry level Pharm.D./MBA dual degree program; a 2-year post B.S. Pharm.D. Degree program; and, a Non-Traditional program to licensed pharmacists who wish to further their professional knowledge and skills. The School also offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Pharmaceutical Sciences to applicants with a B.S. degree.
MISSION: Consistent with the mission of Howard University, the College of Pharmacy mission is to provide pharmacy education of excellent quality to students with high academic, scholarship and leadership potential, with particular emphasis upon the recruitment retention and graduation of promising African America and other ethnically diverse minority students. The College fosters the creation of new knowledge through innovative research and scholarship, commitment to community service and continuous quality improvement, and dedication to superior pharmacy practice locally and globally.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM: The Pharm.D. degree provides students with professional knowledge and skills to perform at a high level of competence in providing pharmaceutical care and drug therapy in community and institutional settings. The curriculum includes courses in biomedical sciences, pharmaceutics, medicinal chemistry, and, clinical and administrative pharmacy sciences.

The College of Pharmacy has a cadre of dedicated faculty who are highly experienced in teaching, professional practice and research.
ACCREDITATION:
The Pharm.D. degree programs are fully accredited by the Accreditation Council on Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE), the national agency for accrediting pharmacy programs in the United States of America.
