Eligibility criteria

  • Graduation from a pharmacy program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) or a program outside the U.S. that qualifies the individual to practice in the jurisdiction;
  • A current, active license to practice pharmacy in the U.S. or another jurisdiction;
  • Completion of three (3) years post-licensure practice experience with at least 50% of time spent in nutrition support pharmacy activities as defined in the BPS Nutrition Support Pharmacy Content Outline; or
  • Completion of a PGY2 residency in Nutrition Support Pharmacy; and
  • Achieving a passing score on the BPS Nutrition Support Pharmacy Specialty Certification Examination.


Recertification is required every seven (7) years and can be accomplished by:

  • Achieving a passing score on the BPS 100-item multiple choice Nutrition Support Pharmacy Recertification Exam; or
  • Earning 100 hours of continuing education credit provided through Purdue University College of Pharmacy.

Duration of initial certification

7 years


  • Domain 1: Clinical Practice: Provision of Patient-Centered Nutrition Support (63% of the exam)
    • Subdomain A: Assessment
    • Subdomain B: Design and Initiation of a Therapeutic Plan of Care
    • Subdomain C: Monitoring and Management
  • Domain 2: Nutrition Support Operations (30% of the exam)
    • Subdomain A: Practice Management
    • Subdomain B: Policy and Protocol Management
    • Subdomain C: Compounding Operations
  • Domain 3: Retrieval, Interpretation, Generation, and Communication of Knowledge in Nutrition Support (7% of the exam)


  • Initial Certification fee: $600
  • Annual Certification Maintenance fee: $125
  • Recertification fee: $400
