Eligibility criteria

  • Graduation from a pharmacy program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) or program outside the U.S. that qualifies the individual to practice in the jurisdiction;
  • A current, active license to practice pharmacy in the U.S. or another jurisdiction; and
  • Achieving a passing score on the BPS Nuclear Pharmacy Specialty Certification Examination. Academic Requirements (up to 2,000 hours):
  • Undergraduate or postgraduate courses in Nuclear Pharmacy
  • MS or Ph.D. in Nuclear Pharmacy
  • Successful completion of the Nuclear Pharmacy Certificate Program Training/Practice (up to 4,000 hours):
  • Residency in Nuclear Pharmacy
  • Internship to satisfy requirements of state boards of pharmacy
  • Nuclear practice in a licensed nuclear pharmacy or healthcare facility


Recertification is required every seven (7) years and can be accomplished by:

  • Achieving a passing score on the BPS 100-item, multiple choice objective Nuclear Pharmacy Recertification Examination;
  • Earning 100 hours of continuing education credit provided through Purdue University College of Pharmacy; and
  • Certification that he/she is not currently under suspension by either the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission or a state Radiation Control Organization.

7 years


  • Domain 1: Procurement, Storage, and Handling (16% of the exam)
  • Domain 2: Preparation, Compounding, and Dispensing (38% of the exam)
  • Domain 3: Quality Assurance (17% of the exam)
  • Domain 4: Health and Safety (19% of the exam)
  • Domain 5: Drug Information and Professional Consultation (10% of the exam)


  • Initial Certification fee: $600
  • Annual Certification Maintenance fee: $125
  • Recertification fee: $400
