¡Bienvenidos! And thank you for your interest in pursuing pharmacy education at The University of Texas at El Paso! The University of Texas at El Paso School of Pharmacy (UTEP SOP) is committed to preparing IDEAL pharmacists to meet the needs of a 21st century demographic. Our vision is “to be a pioneer in the advancement of pharmacy education through Innovation, Diversity, Engagement, Access, and Leadership (IDEAL) in our community and beyond.”
The UTEP SOP Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) curriculum (https://www.utep.edu/pharmacy/current-students/curriculum-summary.html) provides distinct experiences to prepare its students in providing excellent patient care while developing the capacity for lifelong learning.
Students will become proficient in technical medical Spanish.
Students will participate in a study away experience where they immerse themselves in another community (e.g., Washington DC, Nashville, TN, Ireland) and learn about that community’s health-related issues.
The study away experience will be applied in the local setting via service-learning with community partners (e.g., health fairs, homefree/less shelters).
Students will complete a CAPstone project where they work on teams with a faculty member to complete a research project.
Students will have the opportunity to develop their professional and personal skills via co-curricular activities such as leadership development.
PharmD students will work in healthcare teams with medical, nursing, physical therapy, social work, and other healthcare professions students in Interprofessional Professional Experiences to simulate future work as a healthcare team.
All students will engage in practical, hands-on experiences with trained preceptors (i.e., pharmacists and other healthcare providers) to apply their classroom knowledge and professional development in the real world.
Successful students of the program will complete certificate program in Immunization Delivery.
We are looking for students who meet, or believe the SOP will help them grow to meet, our IDEAL.
Innovation: Students who can think outside the box, who show creativity, who have strong critical thinking skills and can troubleshoot in difficult situations.
Diversity: Students who embrace differences and new experiences, who showcase honesty and compassion to everyone, who are culturally competent and who like to step out of their comfort zone.
Engagement: Students who are involved in a variety of extracurricular activities such as community service or student organizations, who showcase professionalism, who have strong assessment and people skills.
Access: Students who are resilient and dedicated, who strive to be inclusive and resourceful, who advocate for those who need it and who encourage others.
Leadership: Students who are adaptable and confident, who have a positive outlook and strive to be a role model for others, who are pro-active and aim to be entrepreneurs and leaders in the field of pharmacy be it in research, education, practice or other settings.
There are many ways an applicant can showcase how they meet, or are striving to meet, the SOP’s IDEAL. We are looking for a diverse student body with a variety of backgrounds, opinions, and experiences. The above characteristics are just examples of how you can showcase your strengths, but there are many other characteristics that can make you an IDEAL candidate.
UTEP Pharmacy is currently in Precandidate status with the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (http://www.aacp.org) (ACPE). The six-year accreditation process requires UTEP Pharmacy to demonstrate that it has the capacity, capability, and resources to institute a successful and competitive pharmacy program. We are confident that we can meet and exceed these requirements.
I invite you to explore our website (www.utep.edu/pharmacy) and learn more about our innovative pharmacy program. We are here to help you through the admissions process so please reach out to us at applypharmacy@utep.edu with any questions. We invite you to attend one of our application fairs or open houses so we can meet you and you can meet us. We welcome you to join us in this journey.
Go Miners!
José O. Rivera, PharmD
