UTHSC is home to theCenter for Healthcare Improvement and Patient Simulation (CHIPS), one of the largest standalone buildings dedicated to healthcare and pharmacy simulation in the United States. State-of-the-art videoconference equipment provides live lectures to students on either campuses, in addition to live lectures with faculty present. Our Curriculum
UTHSC College of Pharmacy implemented of a new, integrated, experience-based curriculum beginning with the 2017-2018 academic year.Interprofessional experiences and clinical simulation courses begin as early as P1 fall semester and continue through completion of the didactic coursework, ensuring our graduates are prepared to contribute as members of interprofessional collaborative patient care teams. The simulation program is committed to fostering education, research, and professional development with a focus on enhanced clinical skills and patient safety through the use of simulation. Standardized patients/family members/colleagues, task trainers, high fidelity human patient simulators, or virtual reality simulations allow student pharmacists to be trained more effectively and improve patient outcomes. Altogether, this promotes greater understanding of the value each discipline contributes to the patient care team and offers student pharmacists the opportunity to build extensive professional networks.
The final three semesters of the curriculum consist of clinical rotations in a variety of settings. Students spend a minimum of eleven months applying their skills with pharmacy practice experiences in community or hospital practice and advanced clinical sites, such as internal medicine, family medicine, critical care, cardiology, parenteral nutrition, mental health, pediatrics, geriatrics, transplant, oncology, home infusion, substance abuse and other specialty areas. Students also have the opportunity to pursue their clinical rotations abroad in one of twelve different countries through our International Advanced Practice Experiences Program.
The curriculum strongly supports graduates who desire to continue their education through residencies or other postgraduate education opportunities as well as those who plan to enter practice directly after graduation. It provides a foundation for the development of knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for students to become self-directed learners who are aware of their own strengths and needs for further development. It instills a responsibility to be an advocate for the profession in the best interest of the patient and the society.
