DETAILED INFORMATION

THE BERNARD J. DUNN SCHOOL OF PHARMACY
The Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy was created in 1995 to respond to the growing need for pharmacists in the health-care system. Shenandoah University responded to this need for additional pharmacists in a unique way. Combining new ideas in pharmacy education with the use of information technology, it created a new educational model that is even more relevant today. The School of Pharmacy offers a Doctorate of Pharmacy Degree (Pharm.D. degree) for traditional and nontraditional students. Traditional students with a bachelor’s degree can also earn a Pharm.D. /MBA degree in conjunction with the Byrd School of Business.
INNOVATIVE CURRICULUM DESIGN AND DELIVERY
Our curriculum is designed to create practice ready clinical pharmacists in the evolving healthcare system. Courses in patient assessment and health care informatics prepare students to provide optimal patient care. Our interprofessional approach to education allows students to work collaboratively with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to be an essential member of an integrated healthcare team. In addition, each student receives an Apple MacBook Pro and iPad to use in the program, as part of Shenandoah University’s iMLearning program.
INTEGRATION OF PHARMACOGENOMICS
Pharmacogenomics uses a patient’s genetic makeup to create individualized drug treatments. We were one of the first pharmacy schools to integrate pharmacogenomics into our curriculum, beginning with an introduction in the first professional year and culminating with application-based practices in the therapeutic sequence.
ADVANCED PHARMACY PRACTICE EXPERIENCES (APPE)
APPE opportunities include top facilities in our region, such as Johns Hopkins, the National Institutes of Health, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and the Food and Drug Administration. The school also partners with Project HOPE to offer a unique practice experience to provide pharmacy services to the international community. New in-depth experiences are being developed to include expanded pharmacy services, such as transitional care and medication management.
