more about the new program…
The Doctor of Pharmacy/Masters in Public Health (PharmD/MPH) dual degree enables students to broaden the scope of their pharmacy training to include a public health perspective. Direct-Entry students who apply via PharmCAS are able to graduate with both a PharmD and MPH degree in just 5 years, saving one full year of study. The Northeastern co-operative education (co-op) model is the only program of its kind among US pharmacy schools. PharmD/MPH direct-entry students participate in up to three co-op experiences (2 required pharmacy co-ops and one optional public health co-op), providing one full year of invaluable real world experience. During the final year of the program, students complete the Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs) required of all PharmD programs. Of the 6 six-week required rotations, one can be a public health-oriented placement. Additionally, in year 5, students take a Public Health Practicum in the fall and Public Health Capstone in the spring. Please see the PharmD/MPH dual degree program page for more information: https://bouve.northeastern.edu/pharmacy/programs/pharmd-mph-direct-entry/

The University: Northeastern University is a private, research university located in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts. The beautiful main campus is situated on 73 acres in Boston’s cultural district and is comprised of 47 academic and administrative buildings, 37 residential facilities and six athletic/recreation facilities. Boston has an international reputation for excellence in health care and Northeastern is in close proximity to three medical schools and many of the country’s best hospitals, medical centers and biotechnology companies. Northeastern is innovative, research-oriented, interdisciplinary, and a world leader in cooperative education. During the past seven years, Northeastern has designed a strategy for success and pursued it with unwavering focus. It has achieved top rankings from numerous external organizations and continues its unprecedented momentum as a world class institution: http://www.northeastern.edu/accomplishments

School of Pharmacy: With an average class size of 145 students, the School of Pharmacy provides the personal attention of a small program backed by the resources and opportunities of a large university – the best of both worlds. As part of the Bouvé College of Health Sciences (which also houses the schools of health science and nursing) the School of Pharmacy embraces an interdisciplinary emphasis that reflects today’s team approach to health care. State-of-the-art labs, high tech classrooms, and affiliations with more than 120 teaching sites, provide our students with the required tools for innovative and interactive learning.
The school continues to stand out with respect to academic quality, experiential education and use-inspired research. The school currently ranks first in NIH funding among private schools of pharmacy and its faculty are recognized on both national and international stages. Research areas include drug discovery and delivery, nanotechnology and biotechnology, community health research, cancer research and neurodegenerative disease research.

The “Co-op Advantage”, Experiential Education within the School of Pharmacy: The proximity to Boston’s world renowned health care institutions provides the backdrop for a cooperative/experiential education program that is second to none. Our affiliations with such institutions provide our students with a variety of exceptional introductory (IPPE) and advanced (APPE) pharmacy practice experiences. At the heart of the Northeastern model is the cooperative education (co-op) program, the only program of its kind among US pharmacy schools. Co-ops are four month experiences that fulfill the Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) which is required in all pharmacy schools. Unique to Northeastern, co-ops also allow students to earn income to offset some of their educational costs. All PharmD students are required to complete both a community and an institutional experience. PharmD/MPH students may participate in an additional public health co-op. Please see the curriculum grids for more information: https://bouve.northeastern.edu/pharmacy/programs/pharmd-mph-direct-entry/

Student Life: Northeastern’s vibrant campus is one of a kind, a sanctuary of lush green spaces and tree-lined pathways that’s located right in the heart of Boston. With the city as our backyard, Northeastern and our students are an integral part of the local community, a connection that makes life on campus active, creative, collaborative, and always interesting. There are more than 330 student clubs and organizations on campus, each offering dynamic opportunities for cultural, recreational, intellectual, and spiritual engagement. (read more at http://www.northeastern.edu/admissions/student-life/) The School of Pharmacy houses eleven highly active pharmacy-related student organizations, providing opportunities for leadership, engagement and service learning.
Beyond the PharmD: Whether it’s placement in a post-graduate fellowship or residency, passing the NAPLEX exam, securing employment, or pursuing an advanced degree, Northeastern students are well-prepared and poised to succeed.
