Hampton University School of Pharmacy is a private institution located on the east coast of Virginia in the picturesque Hampton Roads. The average class size in the School of Pharmacy is approximately sixty-five students so students receive concentrated, individual attention. The School of Pharmacy is committed to maintaining the finest academic environment through faculty development, service-based learning, and scholarly activity.
The School of Pharmacy at Hampton University offers an innovative, entry-level, professional program leading to the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree. The entry-level Doctor of Pharmacy Program requires six or seven years for completion. The School has recently changed its pre-professional program to three years. The School also offers a new two year advanced placement option with additional requirements. Entering freshmen have the option to choose the three year curriculum, or the two year advanced placement curriculum. The first two – three years of the program consists of preprofessional pharmacy education, followed by four years of professional pharmacy education.
First Time College Student:
Students may apply for admission into the pre-pharmacy program directly from high school and must complete two to three years of prerequisite coursework. Applicants who meet the requirements for admission to the University are eligible to be included in the School of Pharmacy’s preprofessional program. Applications will be evaluated based on previous high school performance and standardized test scores. Courses in the pre-pharmacy curriculum include the following: general and organic chemistry, biology, physics, calculus, statistics, economics, heredity, scientific writing for health professionals, cultural assesment for health professionals, microbiology, medical microbiology, anatomy, physiology, English, speech, social science, history and humanities. Pre-pharmacy majors are assigned to an advisor within the School of Pharmacy who assists them with preparation for entrance into the professional program. The PCAT and a GPA of 2.75 are required to be considered for an interview to progress from the pre-pharmacy program into the professional level.
Transfer Students:
Students may complete the prerequisite courses at another institution, transfer into the professional program and complete four years of study leading to the Doctor of Pharmacy degree. The content and comprehensiveness of the prerequisite courses must be comparable to the pre-pharmacy courses offered at Hampton University. To be considered for admission, a transfer student must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.75. A recent PCAT (within the last 24 months), an on-site interview and a high degree of professionalism are required for admission to the professional school. Students following academic tracts other than pre-pharmacy at Hampton University may also apply to the Pharm.D. program, provided they meet the requirements for submitting an application.
