The University of South Carolina (USC) began educating pharmacists more than 150 years ago. After a successful partnership that began in 2004 with the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), the universities’ boards of trustees voted in 2015 to pursue independent accreditation. The University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy’s doctor of pharmacy program has been granted accredited status by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education and appoved by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. As a result, students admitted into the joint South Carolina College of Pharmacy (SCCP) program are following that curriculum and will graduate from the SCCP while students admitted in fall 2016 and beyond have joined the USC College of Pharmacy’s legacy Pharm.D. program.
The USC College of Pharmacy consists of the University of South Carolina campus, based at a large, comprehensive research university, and the Greenville Health System (GHS) University Medical Center campus – a progressive hospital system – to provide high-quality pharmacy education. Students have access to internationally renowned faculty, a broad range of local, national, and international training opportunities, and a wide array of leadership opportunities. Carolina’s College of Pharmacy offers pharmacy education and service learning experiences throughout the state, sponsors multiple residency and fellowship programs, and conducts pioneering research to generate new therapies for diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer’s and addiction. Several centers located at the college provide additional learning opportunities for students, such as the Kennedy Pharmacy Innovation Center and the Palmetto Poison Center.
The University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy offers a four-year Pharm.D. program as well as four dual-degree programs in business, public health, health information technology and pharmaceutical sciences that allow students to earn an additional graduate degree while completing their professional pharmacy studies. In addition, students can customize their education through three track programs that provide training in business, residency preparation, and leadership. Each year, the college admits 110 students to each class. Students may also apply to complete their last two years on the GHS campus, which can accommodate 25 third-year students and a larger number of fourth-year students.
Students completing a pharmacy education at the University of South Carolina have additional advantages as part of a large, comprehensive, research university. Pharmacy students have the opportunity to learn with and from other University of South Carolina healthcare profession students in didactic and experiential courses within the curriculum and extracurricular organizations and outside activities. Students also enjoy traditional benefits of tickets at university sporting events, membership in the over 400 student organizations on campus, and various activities that take place around campus.
The college’s vision is to be the destination to empower pharmacy students, researchers, educators, and practitioners to transform healthcare globally.
